What is hallmarking?

Hallmarking refers to stamping done by BIS registered labs that indicates the purity of gold/precious metalin jewellery and artifacts. Hallmarking of gold refers to stamping of article with its respective purity to ensure transparency for jewellers as well as the benefit of the buyer.

What is BIS?

BIS stands for Bureau of Indian Standards – An organization setup by government that regulates and ensure that everyone follows rules and regulation. In India hallmarking is done by BIS.

Is hallmarking done only for gold jewellery or diamond jewellery?

Hallmarking is done for the metal only not for gemstone. Although jewellery with Diamond, Meena Kari, American Diamond required to be Hallmarked.

Why is hallmarking important?

Hallmarking ensures you pay the exact value of jewellery is worth off and something more.

In India, gold is shopped not only for auspicious purposes or fashion purposes but also as an investment and for some people buying gold is lifetime earnings investment.

In order to ensure that you will get complete value of gold in future for what you paid, hallmarking is important to fetch you the necessary profits.

What do the gold hallmarking rules say?

As per the hallmarking rules, Hallmarking has been made mandatory by the Government of India to ensure the reliability of a jeweller.

Currently, gold purities that are allowed for hallmarking are: 14K, 18K, 20K, 22K, 23K, 24K. old gold, diamond and gemstone jewellery can be hallmarked in its original form, if feasible by the jeweller or after melting and making new jewellery.

You can sell old jewellery to jeweller or get it exchanged for any other hallmarked jewellery. However, it’s important to know that a jeweller is not allowed to sell it again.

Kundan polki, jadaau and jewellery weighing under 2gm, hallmarking is not mandatory. These jewellery can be sell without hallmarking.

Hallmarking have 3 stampings as shown above:

  1. BIS logo: BIS logo is a triangle symbol and provided by BIS itself.
  2. Purity of Gold: Second stamp shows the purity of gold.
  3. XXXXXX: It is a combination of 6 digits and letters which is unique for every article and can be checked on BIS care app.
